Cycads are a class of seed plants with a long history in the fossil record, dating back to at least the Early Permian. Most are wind-pollinated, although a few rely on pollination by very specific types of beetle. Although not universally so, many are poisonous, and a small handful (such as the Sago Cycad) are extremely toxic if consumed.
